Downtown Somerville Alliance Installs Four New Smart Bigbelly Waste & Recycling Units on Division Street

The Downtown Somerville Alliance (DSA) is pleased to announce the installation of four new Bigbelly smart waste units along Division Street, further enhancing cleanliness and sustainability in Downtown Somerville. The new installation includes three trash units and one recycling unit, all equipped with smart technology and built-in compacting systems designed to handle high-traffic use efficiently.

Smarter Waste Management with Built-In Compaction
Unlike traditional public trash cans, Bigbelly units utilize a solar-powered compacting mechanism, making them a significantly greener solution for the downtown area. By harvesting renewable energy from the sun to compress waste, these units operate off the grid while reducing the carbon footprint associated with waste collection. The compacting technology works automatically, maximizing capacity while maintaining a sealed, enclosed design that helps minimize litter, odors, and pest issues. Fewer overfilled bins also mean a more pleasant experience for residents, business owners, and visitors walking along Division Street.

Connected Technology for Efficiency
Each Bigbelly unit is equipped with smart sensors that monitor how full the container is and communicate real-time data to the DSA. This allows collections to be scheduled only when necessary, reducing unnecessary pickups, lowering operational costs, and cutting down on vehicle emissions.

Supporting a Cleaner Downtown Experience
The addition of these Bigbelly units supports DSA’s ongoing efforts to maintain an attractive and walkable downtown environment. Cleaner streets enhance the experience for those visiting local shops, restaurants, and events, while also reinforcing Downtown Somerville’s commitment to sustainability and smart infrastructure.
