Downtown Somerville Alliance Launches Bench Refurbishment Project as Part of 2026 Infrastructure & Beautification Program

The Downtown Somerville Alliance (DSA) announced today that it has begun collecting all 22 public benches along Main Street for refurbishment, marking an early milestone in its 2026 Infrastructure and Beautification Program.

The benches are being professionally restored by a local contractor and are scheduled to be reinstalled along Main Street at the beginning of March. The project is designed to improve comfort, accessibility, and overall streetscape aesthetics for residents, visitors, and downtown patrons.

“This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to maintaining a welcoming, vibrant downtown,” said Dana Kessel, Executive Director of the Downtown Somerville Alliance. “These benches are an important part of the pedestrian experience on Main Street. By investing in their restoration, we’re enhancing both the look and functionality of our public spaces.”

Once completed, the refreshed benches will return to their original locations, offering improved seating while complementing other beautification efforts planned throughout 2026. The bench refurbishment is one of several projects underway as part of DSA’s broader strategy to strengthen downtown infrastructure, support local businesses, and create an inviting environment for the community.

DSA thanks residents and visitors for their patience during the temporary removal of seating and looks forward to unveiling the updated benches in early March.
